In Older Days, Being Green Was "Waste Not - Want Not"
While I was growing up, there was a statement used a lot that was 'waste not, want not' and today the same thing is called being green. Living an environmentally friendly life is basically not wasting any of our resources.
Back then, it was more on not throwing away food, where today it's more on not squandering energy, but the principles are identical. Half a century ago there weren't nearly as many people, or nearly as many electronic gadgets. Due to the boom in the population and a society that's basically prosperous, the demand for gasoline and electricity is at an all time high. You can expect our energy supplies to be used up in a matter of years.
Even though we may find alternative fuels soon, we should still make an effort to help save what we currently have. If many people driving their vehicles daily help cause pollution, then those same millions of people driving less would lessen pollution. Anything that has been done to contribute to the problem, could help remedy the problem by no longer being done. If every person in the world have their lights on causes a huge use of electricity, imagine the amount of electricity that may be saved by everyone turning their lights off.
Just because something is hassle-free, doesn't mean that it is good to do or must be done. Many of the paper wrappers, cups and plastics from fast food eating places are causing the landfills to fill up quickly. There's hardly any thought about recycling the waste, or anything but get your food, eat it, discard what is left, and get back to what you were doing. All major cities are having this dilemma with no end in sight. Energy is being wasted when products for one time use are made then quickly disposed of.
Sometimes conservation doesn't happen, such as with gasoline for our vehicles, until the price gets so high that we're compelled to conserve. How many people never even give some thought to saving on energy, until their bill gets so high that they can't pay it it. You may only be a single person, and you feel anything that you could do would not help much. It could be true, but alongside other people, things can change. What you need to do is simple things, like not driving frequently, don't let your vehicle idle for long periods of time, start recycling and don't buy things any more that can't be recycled.
Your life doesn't need to change that much to end wasting energy. There's no need to take drives when going for a walk would be enough. It isn't required for us to change who we are to be able to save energy and water. You can just slow down and make your life as simple as you possibly can.
